Brown Drip is Hull Pottery's most beloved and most collected glaze — and on this large cigar ashtray, with a leaping deer carved in relief at the center, it is particularly handsome.
The glaze itself is the star: that rich, warm brown with its characteristic drip effect running down the sides, pooling in the recesses of the deer carving, giving the whole piece the organic, tactile quality that made Hull's Brown Drip line one of the most recognizable and sought-after in American mid-century pottery. The deer is beautifully rendered — mid-leap, full of movement — surrounded by nine generous notches designed for cigars. At 8.0 inches in diameter and nearly an inch deep, this is a serious, substantial piece.
Today it functions beautifully as a catchall dish, a trinket tray, a desk organizer, or simply a decorative object — the kind of piece that looks equally at home in a study, a bar, a man cave, or a well-appointed living room. Marked on the base with the Hull USA wordmark. Hand wash recommended to maintain the glaze.

Hull Pottery Company was founded in 1905 in Crooksville, Ohio and became one of America's most beloved art potteries. The Brown Drip glaze line — also known as Mirror Brown — was introduced in 1960 and became Hull's most commercially successful pattern, produced continuously until the pottery closed in 1986. Today Brown Drip pieces are among the most actively collected in American mid-century ceramics, with the leaping deer motif being a particular favorite among collectors.
