Raised in a banking family, he initially aspired to become a history painter and received classical academic training. In the 1850s, he stayed in Italy, where he studied Renaissance painting. In his early years, he produced many portraits of family members and acquaintances and worked on large-scale compositions such as The Bellelli Family.From the late 1860s onward, Degas created works depicting contemporary urban life, including racetracks, theaters, and cafés. From the 1870s, he produced numerous works centered on the ballet of the Paris Opera. He portrayed not only performances on stage but also rehearsals, backstage scenes, and moments of waiting. In his later years, he focused on women bathing or engaged in personal grooming, working in oil as well as pastel, printmaking, and sculpture.
